Kedges work!

May 4, 2013 in Blog, Exercise, Success Stories

Chris – I read both your books on a couple of recent long flights. Interestingly I had already been ‘following’ your program before I even knew about it. Last July I got a reality check when I saw my holiday photos. I had gotten out of control and was nearing 250lb. With my 50th Birthday around the corner I decided to do something about it. I signed up for a Triathlon that just happened to fall on my birthday in April. In the 9 months in between I lost over 30lbs and ended up finishing the triathlon (750m swim / 20km bike and 5km run) in a reasonable time. Your books have reinforced the message and I have now taken it to the next level by signing up for a long bike race in Nov and a 1/2 marathon in Dec. I am training daily and eating better – especially since reading Thinner…. I need to lose another 20-30lb! But like you I am not giving up my wine. Although not tonight as I have a 70k bike ride planned for tomorrow morning! Regards, Keith

Amazing Jonathon and Mary

April 14, 2013 in Success Stories

Went to WAshington DC last weekend to talk to a WPO (chief executives organization); I was  brought down by the most engaging couple you ever saw, Mary and Jonathon. They read Younger Next Year a year or so ago, they really drank the Kool-Ade, they really changed their lives. Especially Jonathon. He works out 6 days a week … sometimes more than once a day. He is thin as a rail and looks lovely. Okay that’s an exaggeration but he lost a ton of weight and he looks absolutely terrific. Huge energy, high optimism… “it changed my life.” Same old same old, and SUCH good news. Mary actually does look lovely, but YNY does not get credit for that: she came that way. But Jonathon is clear that YNY can take full credit for the quality of his life these days. And, as far as he is concerned, it is worth a ton. His life is sweet.

Nice note

Chris, So far I have given away over 25 copies of your book (YNY) and have started over 30 people rowing. When I hear a hint from someone that they are ready to change, I can’t help but give them a copy of YNY. One of my rowers has Parkinson’s and is 73. Another is a retired thoracic surgeon and is 86! He loved your book! I am an airline pilot with Delta and fly with different crews every month, so it is a perfect place to affect other’s lives. They see me exercise on every layover and that often leads to conversations about YNY. Five of the other pilots I have flown with have bought rowers. I choose my layovers in our hotels that have rowers. My standard layover is Paris where the rower overlooks the Seine. Your book changed my life and I am forever grateful to you. Thank you Chris. If you are ever in the Charleston, SC area, please let me know. Off to the gym!! Take good care and YNY! Gratefully, Chuck Hughes

GOOD PATIENT GOOD DOCTOR

January 17, 2013 in Success Stories

Chris, I have to tell you my story. I am a family doc in a small town in western Maine. I was forced to read Younger Next Year by a patient. I am only 48 but he nagged me everywhere I went. Retaurants, grocery stores etc. I finally read it and it changed my outlook for the next ‘Half’. For the last six months I have been studying karate and exercising daily. I feel great. I have recommended the book to no less than 5 patients a day for the last 6 months. The best success story is a 72 year old diabetic hypertensive who was able to get off all rx. This last week of vacation, his grandson was up from Massachusetts. My patient asked him if he wanted to go to the gym with him. His grandson asked if they had an ‘old fart’ gym. Needless to say, grandpa out lifted him and that’s all the grandson is talking about. My daughter is 13 and I am hoping for the day she or her kids, some day, say “I can’t believe grandpa can do this!”

After reading “Younger Next Year” I began to realize and have a better understanding, as I mature (I like to use that term rather than old or older) as to what is happening to my body.

I began my finess adventure later in life at the age of 52. This book has helped me understand the connection of how I think, the relationships I have, my plans and endeavors I make and how they affect my physical well being. The title is exactly how I feel since I decided to take more control of my mind and body. I feel and look better than I ever have in my life.

This journey led me to compete in fitness competitions at the age of 52-how crazy is that! I am now a fitness instructor and health and wellness educator and have a specific interest in working with the mature adult. It makes it a lot easier when you’ve experienced it yourself at this age. What a great book!

Since my youth I’ve been reasonably active with recreational sports and in the last decade, inactive in the fitness industry as a silent investor.

When I read “Younger Next Year”  I found myself underlining page after page of golden nuggets of truth and wisdom. The book is the real deal encompassing brain, heart, emotions, strength, nutrition and more as we age.

It changed my lifestyle! Now I am active with the fitness industry, actually a bit of an evangelist, pitching the book to friends. With the support of fitness professionals, and our strength and conditioning products, I am younger, and in the best shape since my collegiate athletic years.

Chris, I wanted to give you an idea of how much “Younger Next Year” has changed my life. I have a perspective on aging that’s both personal and professional. In my working life I am an RN, advising people with serious health problems – like coronary arterial disease, diabetes and hypertension – about how to keep themselves out of hospital. I see that despite all the knowledge and information out there, people have a tremendous motivational deficiency – we all do. We all live in the midst of the bad decisions we’ve made, yet we’re paralyzed when it comes to making better ones.
“Younger Next Year” helps us over that hurdle of ‘how do I do it’. It says ‘get over the decision. Treat it like a job. It is just what you do’.
So that’s why I’ve gone from being someone who never worked out for health to being at my local YMCA four to five times a week before work. And I am much more productive, much more active than ever before.
The picture you see is me and my husband on our tandem bike and it was taken while we rode from the NC mountains to the coast in seven days. That’s 503 miles, about 70 miles a day. Ten weeks earlier I didn’t even ride a bike. I started reading YNY in July, loved your ‘voice’ and set the ride across NC as our ‘kedge’, started training eight weeks before and did it! It was an amazing ride and a shift mentally about exercising for my life – simply a monumental event and a monumental book of enlightenment and motivation.
I’m forever changed and it has stuck!
Now I find myself recommending your book to others at least five times a day while work. It’s heartbreaking to see so many people living life without regard to the long-term implications of their choices but your book gives hope that it doesn’t have to be that way.
As both a professional nurse and the creator of a line of heart jewelry dedicated to helping people express their love, since reading YNY I find myself even more passionate about nursing the hearts of others through sharing the philosophy of being younger next year! Thanks Chris! Thanks Harry!

FORTY POUNDS LIGHTER

January 7, 2012 in Success Stories

I am a fifty-four year old practicing internist in Denison Texas, about an
hour north of Dallas. I read your book last February, and must confess it
absolutely changed my life. Forty pounds lighter, five inches slimmer, and
with an all-around better outlook on life, I can’t wait to see what “next
year” will bring. Tomorrow, I will run ten miles for the first time since I
was twenty-two-thought you would like to know.

I’M 53 AND HIKING KILIMANJARO

January 7, 2012 in Success Stories

Hi Chris, I read your book and loved it. It made such a difference to me. I have been a fit person but then allowed things to slide (literally) over the past 10 years. Your book gave me a huge boost and got me going again. I am 53 and hiking Kilimanjaro in Jan 2010 so have been training and this will be a big adventure.

I am also a high level (ski) race official and will be coming to the Aspen World Cup end of Nov as the technical delegate. Would love your ski week. Let me know when you are planning it and hopefully there are a few of us who could join you.

Best Regards,
Jill Schofield
